Nerd Open Mic
Friday, October 5th, 1:30pm
Fayetteville Public Library, Walker Meeting Room
Free

Not all of us can be nerds, and even fewer of us can write poems about it. But sometimes, you need to hear a poem from Doctor Who to the Dalek he loves, or a group piece with Gandalf and Dumbledore, or a highly metaphorical explanation of exactly why Star Wars is superior to Star Trek, all done in Shyriiwook, the language of the Wookies. Dive in head first to some of the best nerd poems in the world, and come with some of your own if you like! But you better bring your nerd A-game; no one gets to read without first answering trivia on their subject of choice.

Performing for a Hostile Audience
Friday October 5th, 1:30pm
Nightbird Books

Sometimes, the audience doesn't like you. Maybe it's because you're performing poetry at a dive bar, maybe it's because they had too much to drink and decided heckling was fun, or maybe it's just one of those days. But at some point, you're going to have to know how to perform for people who have it out for you. Thankfully, our local expert on handling being hated on will show you exactly how to defuse the situation, and hopefully turn it in your favor. Hosted by JW Basilo.

Jam Slam
Rogue on Dickson
Friday, October 5th, 11:30pm

It's time for the biggest Jam Slam ever! Poets from across the world will be here, performing over music provided by some of the best improv musicians around.

How a Jam Slam works:All musicians set up beforehand, such that they are ready to play at a moments notice. They sign up on a list with their name and what instrument(s) they play. The poets sign up on a seperate list. Poets are called up one by one, and then "draft" whatever musicians they would like to be a part of that particular piece. The poet tells the musicians what sort of feel he/she wants the music to have, and then the musicians play as the poet performs. If you play an instrument and are comfortable improvising, feel free to bring it!
